The plans originally called for putting the new dam in front of the old dam. Unfortunately the land in front of the old dam was not appropriate for the new dam, so instead the new dam was built behind the old dam. This meant that the old reservoir needed to be drained so the new dam could be built. The problem was people in the Bronx still had to depend on that old reservoir while the new reservoir was under construction. The solution was to build a dike just northeast of Kensico and flood part of the valley between the peninsula and NY-22 to form a temporary reservoir, called New Rye Lake. A road crossed this valley, so a temporary bridge was also built.
